For our live brief at AUB, our year group were fortunate to be invited to work in collaboration with the International Design Company Cos, to create a collection for their 10th anniversary. Our brief was to incorporate their desire to focus on zero waste whilst developing new designs consistent with their strong brand identity.
My assigned role, as Production Manager for our team, provided me with an opportunity for valuable, professional development. Working in collaboration with Cos in this way has helped to prepare me for the transition into work from fashion school and also gave me the opportunity of gaining invaluable knowledge about the fashion industry.
Inspired by fresh ideas and new objectives, the challenge was navigating these with the team. It was important that we remained focused on the message whilst working to deliver the products.
As Production Manager I was responsible for team collaboration and organisation. It was important therefore to coordinate a supportive team, while remaining focused on the mission. In order to promote team cooperation, it was necessary to develop effective communication skills. Directing a team meant I had to learn how to talk and listen effectively, and to influence my team without being too authoritative. Learning how to disagree agreeably is a valuable skill. Effective coordination required regular meetings to assess our groups progress, to move things forward, and to check we were on target with our desired outcomes.
The opportunity given to me for this project was invaluable. Production Manager was a completely new challenge, requiring me to draw on the technical skills learnt during my first year as a student, whilst developing new, management skills to bring the project to completion in a timely manner. I learnt that successful team work requires recognising other’s strengths and delegating accordingly, which results in a cohesive and enthusiastic group. Ultimately the project was successful, and we succeeded in efficiently creating a breath-taking collection which corresponded with the brief.
